Happiness is that feeling of well being that virtually every human being longs for. One of the reasons that happiness can be so elusive is because we have fear hardwired into our brains.
As I’ve mentioned before, from a Neuroscience standpoint, a major contributor to our chronic fear feelings are based in an area of the brain known as the Amygdala, and there is another area in the brainstem that contributes as well.
However, to the degree that you begin to ‘wake up’ and take charge of your own thinking patterns, happiness will stay a pipe dream.
IN OUR FOCUS ON SURVIVAL, WE ARE KILLING OURSELVES!
How ironic is this?
Yes, survival is important but our fear of living is way out of proportion to modern day reality. Back in prehistoric time, we were hunters and we were hunted. We also used a lot of energy running and moving about in order to stay alive. This helped to burn off the hormones that can be harmful to our bodies if they are not used.
They can be thought of as ‘stress hormones’. Now, even though we don’t have the same environmental dangers, we create mental worry and scenarios, often unfounded and on autopilot, that rob us of our joy and our life.
We can lose our ‘life’ even if we are still ‘alive’.
I used to be guilty of this until I woke up myself. I was always living in the past or the future, and I was constantly dissatisfied with either myself or something in my life. Many people are in jobs they hate and they are afraid to follow their hearts, ‘just to pay the bills’.
In the meantime, they develop heart disease, high blood pressure and other chronic disease due to the stress of dealing with their lives. If this goes unchecked, it can lead to the very thing that they were trying to avoid – loss or even death itself.
If your focus is on fear, you will create the very thing that you don’t want. Your mind is like a radar missile and it is headed for what you keep your thoughts and feelings on. It is too bad that as a society, we are conditioned, for one reason or another to keep our attention on information that does not lead to long-term happiness or fulfillment.
Listening to the news is often terrible for your health. Just notice the thoughts or queasiness you feel after listening. Why go to sleep on the kind of information that can give you nightmares? This is why I turned off the TV years ago.
I can find what I want to read on the Internet. When you keep your focus on what is wrong with life, or worse, you believe that something is ‘wrong with you’, you help your fear center to work over-time. This of course, leads to a chronic feedback loop.
The only way to break the cycle is to become aware of your own powerful ability to change, and get acquainted with the most powerful ‘Bio-Computer’ on the planet that drives that change: Your Mind.
Happiness is an ‘inside’ job!
